Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The North Dakota State baseball team dropped to 2-2 in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, falling 18-1 to Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday morning.
NDSU (6-7 overall) will play Yale in Auburndale, Fla., on Thursday at 5 p.m. (CT).
Sophomore Parker Trewin got the start on the mound for the Bison, but he was pulled in the third inning after allowing seven runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks.
The Bison used six pitchers in the seven-inning game, including Brian VanderWoude, Zach Mayo, Mark Hermes, Adam Poehlmann and Jake Heck. VanderWoude made his collegiate pitching debut in the third inning in relief of Trewin. Mayo struck out four batters in two innings of relief.
Jon Hechtner, Blake Turbak, Wes Satzinger, Tate Leapaldt and John Skrbec all singled for the Bison.
Miami (6-6) piled up 17 hits and drew eight walks in the game. Center fielder Alex Johnson went 3-for-5 with one double, one triple, three RBI and three runs scored. Left-hander Brian Thene pitched six innings to earn his first win of the season.
The RedHawks opened a 2-0 lead after two innings and stretched the margin to 7-0 with five runs - two of them unearned - in the third inning.
