Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS – North Dakota State's John Straka struck out 10 batters and pitched all seven innings for a 1-0 win over North Dakota in the first game of a college baseball doubleheader Friday, March 29, at the Metrodome.
NDSU's Andy Wicklund went 3-for-3 with a two-run double and Adam Lambrecht pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for a 9-3 victory in the nightcap. The Bison improved to 12-9 overall with their third and fourth straight wins.
Nick Altavilla went 3-for-3 to lead the Bison attack in the opener. His well-placed sac bunt attempt went for a hit and put two runners on in the bottom of the seventh before Tim Colwell delivered a one-out single to score pinch runner Mark Hermes from second.
UND (7-9-1) threatened to break the scoreless tie in the third with a pair of one-out singles and a stolen base to put two men in scoring position, but Straka (4-0) fanned two in a row to escape the jam before striking out the side in the fourth. He allowed six hits and walked none.
NDSU jumped ahead 6-2 through three innings in the nightcap. Wicklund's double broke a 1-1 tie in the second inning and Altavilla broke the game open with a two-run double in NDSU's three-run third inning.
The Bison tacked on a single run in the fifth when Wicklund singled with two outs and scored on Colwell's triple to right-center field. NDSU scored twice in the sixth on four walks and a hit batter.
NDSU and UND play a 12:15 p.m. doubleheader Saturday, March 30, at the Metrodome to close out the four-game series.
