Bison Snap Seven-Game Losing Streak, Earn 20th Victory in Split With Jackrabbits

FARGO, N.D. - John Skrbec drove in three runs including a solo homer in the fourth to give North Dakota State an 11-10 win over South Dakota State in the first game of a Summit League baseball doubleheader Tuesday, May 14, at Newman Outdoor Field.

SDSU's Eric Danforth hit a two-run single to cap a four-run sixth inning and J.D. Moore struck out four of the seven batters he faced to pick up his league-leading 11th save as the Jackrabbits won the nightcap 6-5.

North Dakota State (20-25, 7-13 Summit) snapped a seven-game losing streak and reached the 20-win mark for the fourth straight season.  South Dakota State (30-18, 15-7 Summit) clinched the No. 1 seed for next week's league tournament with its victory.

NDSU is alone in fifth place just .004 ahead of Fort Wayne in the standings entering the teams' four-game series which begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 16.  SDSU goes to first-place Omaha for a four-game set trailing the Mavs by two games in the standings.

The Bison rallied from a 10-3 deficit in the opener after SDSU took advantage of eight walks and sent 15 men to the plate in a 10-run second inning.  A two-run double by Blake Turbak and a two-run triple by Skrbec cut the deficit to 10-8 in the bottom of the second.

NDSU tied the game 10-10 in the third when Wes Satzinger and Kyle Kleinendorst hit back-to-back RBI doubles with two outs and Skrbec's leadoff homer in the fourth rode wind gusts of 30 mph out to right field to give NDSU the lead.

Jake Heck pitched three scoreless innings of relief and upped his record to 1-0 with the victory in the opener, and Kyle Kingsley pitched 2 1/3 innings for his seventh save of the season.  SDSU's Talon Jumper gave up the home run and dropped to 3-2 with the loss.

NDSU took a 4-2 lead through four innings in the nightcap, but SDSU rallied with two outs in the sixth.  Aaron Machbitz doubled in Paul Jacobson to start the scoring, Machbitz scored on Reid Clary's single, and a pair of walks loaded the bases to set up Danforth's hit to make it 6-4.

Tim Colwell hit a leadoff single in the seventh and scored on Turbak's two-out double to cut the deficit to 6-5.  Moore got a strikeout and ground ball to leave runners on the corners in the NDSU eighth and fanned three straight after a leadoff walk in the ninth.

Satzinger was 3-for-4 and scored three runs in the opener, and Turbak finished 3-for-5 in the nightcap.  Zach Mayo was responsible for all four runs in the sixth inning and moved to 1-1 on the season with the Game 2 loss.
