ROCHESTER, Mich. - Tournament MVP Daniel Telford hit a two-out RBI double in the first inning and top-seeded South Dakota State held on to beat No. 3 seed North Dakota State 1-0 in the Summit League baseball championship Sunday, May 26.
South Dakota State improved to 35-22 overall and advanced to its first NCAA Division I regional tournament. North Dakota State finished its season 26-27 overall.
NDSU's Wes Satzinger and Blake Turbak each hit 2-for-4 and starter Trevor Jaunich dropped to 2-7 with the loss allowing two hits and two walks in three innings. Closer Kyle Kingsley threw four scoreless middle innings and Friday's winning pitcher John Straka tossed two scoreless.
SDSU starter Shane Kraemer allowed five hits, no walks and struck out two in 5 1/3 innings to improve to 4-2 with the win. Summit League Pitcher of the Year Layne Somsen, the losing pitcher in Thursday's opening round got the final six outs for his first save of the year.
NDSU had its leadoff man reach base just three times in 18 innings on Sunday. The Bison went down in order after Turbak's double started the seventh, and Somsen retired six straight after Tim Colwell singled to start the eighth.
The Bison left seven runners on base and six were in scoring position. NDSU put runners on the corners after a double play in the fifth and had back-to-back one-out singles in the sixth from Satzinger and Kyle Kleinendorst before a double play.
