Defense Turns In Big Plays, NDSU Beats Oakland 4-1 in Series Opener

Box Score

FARGO, N.D. - North Dakota State threw out two runners at the plate and turned a pair of inning-ending double plays to beat Oakland 4-1 in Summit League baseball Friday, May 3, at Newman Outdoor Field.

John Straka scattered 11 hits over eight innings with no walks and four strikeouts to improve to 6-2 on the season, and Kyle Kingsley got three ground ball outs around a one-out double in the ninth for his sixth save of the year.

Kirk Kenneally went 2-for-4 at the plate and Blake Turbak, Michael Leach and Nick Altavilla each hit RBI doubles for North Dakota State, which improved to 19-17 overall and 6-5 in The Summit League.

Five players had two hits each for Oakland (11-28, 6-9) including Spencer Marentette, who hit an RBI double in the fifth inning.  Jason Hager (2-6) pitched all eight innings allowing eight hits and one walk with six strikeouts.

Mike Carson hit a two-out single in the Oakland first and was thrown out on the next play when Jared Theisen doubled into the left field corner. The Bison executed an on-time relay with third baseman John Skrbec making the cutoff from Kyle Kleinendorst to Leach.

NDSU got a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the second inning and Oakland had runners on the corner in the third when Mike Brosseau lined out to second baseman Wes Satzinger, who threw to first to catch Trent Drumheller off base.

Turbak hit an RBI double in the third and Leach got his in the fourth for a 2-0 lead, but Oakland pulled within a run in the fifth when Robby Enslen hit a leadoff double and scored one out later on Marentette's double.

Oakland tried to tie the game on the next play when Kyle Bobolts lined a single into center field but Tim Colwell's no-hop throw to the plate was in plenty of time to catch Marentette at the plate and keep it a 2-1 game.

Altavilla's sixth-inning double plated two runs with Kleinendorst scoring all the way from first base after a fielding error in the right field corner to make it 4-1.

The four-game series continues with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4, and the final game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, May 5.
