FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State women's basketball team (5-14) used a blistering second half shooting performance to coast to an 83-61 victory over the Valley City State Vikings (10-6) Wednesday, Jan. 22, inside the Bison Sports Arena.
NDSU went 22-for-34 from the field in the second stanza, an impressive 65 percent.
Brooke LeMar and Holly Johnson both surpassed the 20-point barrier in the game, scoring 21 and 20, to pace the Bison. The 21 points from LeMar marked the seventh time in 2013-14 she has scored at least 20 points in a game. Marena Whittle also reached double figures, scoring 18 points, respectively.
Leading 35-25 at halftime, NDSU's LeMar ignited the Bison offense to begin the second stanza, converting back-to-back layups to increase the Bison advantage to 39-25 with 17:24 to go in the half.
A jumper from Whittle with 16:57 remaining and a layup from Miki Stephenson 22 seconds later ballooned the advantage to 18, 43-25, and the Bison never looked back.
The Bison controlled the glass in the contest, out-rebounding the Vikings, 48-32, and scored 50 points in the paint while holding Valley City State to just 22 points on the inside.
For the game, NDSU was 34-for-66 (52 percent) from the field.
The Vikings were led by Sadiqah Jihad and Megan Trautman with 10 points apiece.
The Bison return to action Saturday, Jan. 25, hosting rival and 22nd-ranked South Dakota State in Summit League play at the Bison Sports Arena in the annual Katherine Burgum Classic. Tip-off is slated for 2:05 p.m.
The game will be televised throughout the state of North Dakota on MeTV and can be heard on KVOX 740-AM "The Fan" beginning 20 minutes prior to tip-off.
