Second-Half Surge Leads Bison Past Hampton for 2k Classic Regional Title, 74-66

FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State University men's basketball team overcame a nine-point deficit in the second half to pull away for a 74-66 victory over Hampton in the championship game of the 2k Classic sub-regional held at Scheels Arena on Saturday, Nov. 22.
 
Redshirt freshman A.J. Jacobson poured in a season-high 19 points for the Bison, and freshman guard Paul Miller scored 17 for the second straight game.
 
NDSU (2-2 overall) shot 11-of-23 from three-point range and 45 percent overall. The Bison committed just eight turnovers in the game.
 
Down 44-35 early in the second half, the Bison rattled off a 9-0 run to tie the game at 44-44. NDSU trailed 52-51 with 15 minutes remaining, but a three-pointer by Lawrence Alexander gave the Bison a lead and Jacobson hit another trey to stretch the margin to five points.
 
NDSU outscored the Pirates 39-24 in the second half.
 
Miller, Jacobson and Chris Kading, who scored 12 points and hit two threes on Saturday, were named to the All-Tournament Team. Miller earned Most Valuable Player honors for the Fargo sub-regional.
 
The Bison led 30-27 with five minutes left in the first half before the Pirates hit their next three shots to take a 35-32 advantage. Hampton pushed its lead to nine points at 42-33 on a three-point play by Chievous. A jumper in the lane at the buzzer by A.J. Jacobson made the halftime margin 42-35.
 
Hampton shot 61.5 percent and went 6-of-7 from three-point range in the first half.
 
Sophomore forward Dexter Werner came off the NDSU bench to register three blocked shots. Carlin Dupree filled the stat sheet with seven points, seven rebounds and five assists in a career-high 35 minutes for the Bison.
 
NDSU hosts Minnesota-Crookston at Scheels Arena on Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 7 p.m.
