Bison Battle, Come Up Short at Southern Miss, 78-65

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Lawrence Alexander poured in 23 points and tied the NDSU single-game school record with a career-best seven three-pointers, but the North Dakota State men's basketball team lost 78-65 at Southern Miss on Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles shot 64.4 percent inside Reed Green Coliseum.
 
NDSU (4-3 overall) cut a 21-point deficit to 10 over a 10-minute stretch of the second half, but the Bison were unable to overcome a big first-half run by Southern Miss.
 
Sophomore guard Carlin Dupree scored a career-high 16 points for the Bison, with 14 coming after halftime. Sophomore forward Dexter Werner posted 13 points and eight rebounds for NDSU – near career-highs in both categories.
 
Alexander connected on 7-of-11 attempts from beyond the arc, tying the school record for threes that has now been achieved 12 times by eight different players.
 
Southern Miss (4-2 overall) used an early 23-3 run over a span of less than seven minutes to take a 26-7 lead midway through the first half. The Golden Eagles made 8 of their first 10 shots and 65 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes to lead 39-21 at halftime.
 
Southern Miss reached its largest lead of 21 points at 45-24 on a three-point play by Shadell Millinghaus with 17:45 left in the second half. NDSU battled back, trimming the deficit to 10 points at 55-45 on a putback by Carlin Dupree with 7:21 left, but the Golden Eagles hit a three-pointer and a layup on their next two possessions to go up 60-45.
 
The Bison won the rebounding battle, 26-24, and committed just three turnovers after halftime and 12 total.
 
Southern Miss won its 19th straight home game and its 38th consecutive home non-conference game.
 
NDSU will wrap up its three-game road trip with a contest at Montana on Sunday, Dec. 7, at 8 p.m. (CT)/7 p.m. (MT).
