Bison Softball Sweeps South Dakota State 5-1, 14-2 in Summit League Twinbill

BROOKINGS, S.D.--Krista Menke tossed her third straight two-hitter and Logan Moreland hit a pair of home runs to lead North Dakota State University to a 5-1 win in the opener over South Dakota State and the Bison scored in double-figures for the seventh time this season in taking game two 14-2 to complete the Summit League sweep on Friday, April 11, at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium.

NDSU (23-13, 6-1 SL) and SDSU (7-25, 2-9 SL) are scheduled to conclude the three-game series at noon Saturday, April 12.

Moreland, a 5-foot-8 sophomore from Woodland, Calif., hit her first home run of the game with one out in the first inning and closed out the scoring with a lead-off homer in the seventh. The homers were the third and fourth of the season. Moreland tied the school single-game record set 17 times previously by 12 different athletes including teammates Amanda Grable, twice, and Maritza Lopez-Portillo.

South Dakota State tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning when lead-off hitter Sammy Bingham went deep on Menke to open the game. However, she retired the next 12 Jackrabbit batters in order.

Menke (17-5) completed her third straight two-hitter with a career-high 13 strikeouts and no walks. Jennifer Sutton (3-10) took the loss for SDSU.

North Dakota State took the lead for good at 3-1 with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Jenna Isbel stroked a two-out double to highlight the inning as the Bison took advantage of three hits and an error.

Jenina Ortega and Lopez-Portillo opened the fourth inning with singles with Ortega crossing the plate on Isbel's ground out. Ortega had a solid day behind the plate, throwing out a pair of Jackrabbits attempting to steal. She has thrown out 14 of 29 baserunners this season.

Moreland and Jackie Stifter each led the Bison with two hits in the first game.

NDSU scored in four of five innings in the nightcap including four-runs in the first and the third innings. All eleven players who went to the plate collected a hit and nine scored.

The Bison pounded out 14 hits led by Ortega, who went 2-for-2 with a home run and tied a career-high with five RBI. She hit a three-run home run with one out in the first inning, delivered a RBI single in the second and added a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

Alex Sobrero went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Cheyenne Garcia laced a two-run double in the third inning and finished with three runs batted in. Brandi Enriquez and Lopez-Portillo both added doubles. Freshman Dani Renner closed out the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning. It was Renner's second home run of the season.

SDSU was paced by Sammy Bingham's pair of doubles, and a double and single from Elyse Eitel.

Tabby Bayers (4-6) and Katie Thun worked on the mound for the Bison with Bayers picking up the win. The pair combined to scatter six hits, strike out three and issue no walks. Katie Lang (0-7) and Ashlyn Bender pitched for SDSU with Lang taking the loss.
