USAF ACADEMY, Colo.--
Lauren Miller scored a pair of goals including the game-winner three minutes into the second overtime and
Sierra Bonham turned in a solid effort in the net to lift North Dakota State University to a 2-1 win over host Air Force on Friday, Aug. 29, before 654 fans on a rain-soaked field at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
The match was delayed officially an hour and 20 minutes due to lightning and thunderstorm that drenched the field.
North Dakota State (3-0-0) is scheduled to play the University of Northern Colorado (1-2-0) at 1 p.m. (CT) in Greeley. The Bison have won three straight to start the season for the first time since 2007. NDSU has won three of its last four overtime games.
Miller, a 5-foot-9 sophomore from St. Louis Park, Minn., opened and closed the scoring for the Bison. Miller's game-winner came 3:02 into the second overtime period when she followed the deflection off a shot from the right side by
Lizzie Lukas to left side inside the post and past a defender. Her first goal came on a one-on-one move, a 15-yard shot that curled into the right corner of the net. Miller has scored five goals in the first three games.
Bonham, junior from Red Deer, Alberta, kept a hard-charging Air Force offense at bay for a majority of the match. She was credited with 11 saves including nine in the first half. Bonham also made alert decisions coming out and stopping plays before they could finish.
Air Force scored it's only goal 13:16 into the match on Ally Swift's penalty kick. The Falcons controlled the tempo for a majority of the first half with a 15-2 advantage in shots, 10-1 in shots on goal and six corners.
North Dakota State grew stronger as the match went along, keeping possession to set up scoring chances down the stretch after Air Force had a goal wiped away following one of five offsides the Bison drew in the second half. In the 78th minute,
Jaclyn Scanlan was chased down by a defender and sent a shot wide right, while the 85th minute
Mikayla Jacobson lifted a lob shot over the AFA goalkeeper from 20 yards that skipped wide left.
Air Force outshot the Bison 26-15 overall, including 13-5 on attempts on goal and had 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
