LAS CRUCES, N.M. – California junior middle blocker Lillian Schonewise registered 11 kills and a .714 hitting percentage to lead the Golden Bears volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of North Dakota State at the New Mexico State Tournament on Friday, Sept. 5. Set scores were 25-16, 25-18 and 25-18 in favor of Cal.
Cal (4-1) hit .271 for the match, outpacing the .078 attack percentage by the Bison. Cal is ranked 30th in the nation in the latest AVCA poll.
NDSU (1-4) was led by six kills from sophomore middle blocker Emily Minnick. Freshman Brianna Rasmusson added five kills, and sophomore Hadley Steffen tallied four. Sophomore libero Emily Milligan posted 15 digs to lead the Bison.
NDSU opened with a 4-0 lead in the opening set and still led Cal at 10-9, but the Golden Bears scored 14 of the last 19 points to win the set. Cal never trailed over the second and third sets. The Bison pulled within 18-16 in the final set, but a 7-2 run by Cal sealed the match.
NDSU will play its final match at the New Mexico State Tournament tomorrow, taking on Radford at 11 a.m. (CT) at the Pan American Center.
