South Dakota Defeats NDSU 3-2 in Summit League Volleyball Quarterfinal

DENVER, Colo. – Brittany Jessen recorded a triple-double with 13 kills, 10 digs and 46 assists as the University of South Dakota defeated North Dakota State University 3-2 (22-25, 25-17, 25-20, 16-25, 15-10) in a Summit League Volleyball quarterfinal match played Friday, Nov. 20, in Hamilton Gymnasium at the University of Denver.
NDSU ends the season with a 19-12 record. South Dakota (15-15) advanced to take on top-seeded Denver (25-6) on Saturday, Nov. 21, in the first semifinal.
Named The Summit League Setter of the Year on Thursday night, Jessen directed a South Dakota offense that caught fire in sets two and three to post 25-17 and 25-20 wins. The Bison fired back to take set four 25-16, but couldn't hold back the Coyotes. USD outhit NDSU .262 to .225 and had nine team blocks compared to three for the Bison.
North Dakota State led 5-4 in set five on a Monica Claxton soft kill on a pass from Mikaela Purnell, but South Dakota reeled off four straight points including kills from Hayley Dotseth and Lindsey Brown.
Emily Minnick responded on a pair of attacks in the middle to cut the deficit to 8-7 before the Coyotes scored the next four points to gain control.
Purnell, a 5-foot-9 sophomore from Excelsior, Minn., came up with a career-high 32 digs for North Dakota State. She became the first NDSU player to reach 30 digs since Andrea Henning had 30 at Northwestern State on Nov. 23, 2012.
Lone NDSU senior Jenni Fassbender finished with a team-high 17 kills including nine in the Bison first set win. Minnick followed with 16 kills and hit .394, while Emily Miron had 14 kills and hit .400. Claxton contributed 40 assists, 10 digs and three kills. Morgan Samec and Fassbender each served a pair of aces.
Audrey Reeg connected for a match-high 18 kills to lead four USD hitters in double-figures, while Brown collected 11 kills and four blocks Lauren Mattison claimed 19 digs.
