North Dakota State 4, Oregon State 2 (Box Score).pdfSan Diego State 6, North Dakota State 1 (Box Score).pdfSAN DIEGO, Calif.--North Dakota State University defeated Oregon State 4-2, but fell to host San Diego State 6-1 during the first day of the 25th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic on Thursday, Feb. 12, at the SDSU Softball Complex.
NDSU (5-2) is scheduled to play Central Michigan (0-4) at 1:30 p.m. and Seton Hall (5-0) at 4 p.m. Central on Friday, Feb. 13.
The Bison took advantage of five wild pitches and four walks to turn back Oregon State (5-2) in the opener. Four of those wild pitches came in the first inning including a pair on strikeouts as NDSU pushed across two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Amanda Grable delivered a key RBI double to right center in the frame.
The Beavers trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the second on Hannah Akamine's solo home run to left with two outs.
North Dakota State extended the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second inning.
Katie Shoultz led off with a bunt single between third and shortstop, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. Following a
Logan Moreland walk, the Bison pulled off a double steal and Shoultz scored from third.
Oregon State used three two-out singles and a bases-loaded walk to cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning.
NDSU picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Moreland reached on a bunt single, moved to second on a
Cheyenne Garcia base hit and to third on a walk to
Alyssa Reina. The fifth wild pitch of the game chased Moreland home to extend the Bison lead to 4-2.
North Dakota State's
Krista Menke (4-0) notched her 10th strikeout to end the Beavers' two-on, two-out threat in the top of the seventh. Menke scattered five hits, walked three and hit one batter. Menke reached double-figure strikeouts for the third time this season and 10th time in her career. Oregon State's Beverly Miller (3-2) picked up the loss. Miller struck out seven and walked four.
NDSU outhit OSU 9-5 lead Grable's 3-for-4 effort at the plate.
Jackie Stifter and Moreland each added two hits.
Lorena Bauer went 2-for-3 with a two-run single and RBI double to lead host San Diego State (4-2) to the second game win. The Aztecs took a 2-0 lead in the first on Bauer's first hit and then exploded for four runs in the third inning to break the game open. The third inning was highlighted by Jaylene Inagico's two-run home run.
North Dakota State, which stranded eight baserunners, averted the shutout with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Garcia walked, advanced to second on a Grable single and scored on
Maritza Lopez-Portillo's double to left field. Moreland finished with a pair of hits for NDSU.
Erica Romero (3-2) recorded the win for San Diego State. Romero struck out six and walked four.
Jacquelyn Sertic (1-2) picked up loss. Sertic allowed six hits, struck out five and walked two.
