Omaha Defeats NDSU Baseball Saturday, 11-6

OMAHA, Neb. – The North Dakota State University baseball team (5-13, 1-4 Summit League) fell at Omaha (12-8, 5-0 Summit League) Saturday, March 21, 11-6.

The Bison and Mavericks are scheduled to finish the three-game Summit League series on Sunday, March 22, at 1 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town in Omaha.

JT Core paced the Bison offense, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Paul Funk, Ben Petersen and Andy Wicklund also collected two hits in the contest, and Aiden Hook drove in a pair of runs.

Lefty Trent Keefer (1-3) suffered the loss on the mound for NDSU after allowing four earned runs on 10 hits with a pair of strikeouts and three walks in four innings of work.

The Bison took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning after Hook hit a RBI single through the left side, scoring Core, who led-off the frame with a single and moved to second on a UNO wild pitch.

The lead was short-lived, though, as Omaha scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead.

NDSU cut the Maverick advantage to 3-2 in the top of the fourth when Hook plated Danny Regan on a sacrifice fly ball to right field, but Omaha added six runs in the bottom-half of the inning, increasing its lead to 9-2.

North Dakota State trimmed to UNO lead to 9-4 after scoring two runs in the top of the fifth on RBI singles from Core and Regan, but the Mavs pushed the lead to 10-4 with a run in the bottom-half of the frame.

The Bison cut the Maverick edge to 10-6 in the top of the sixth, plating two runs on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly.

Alex Mortensen paced the Omaha offense, going 3-for-5 at the plate with four RBI. Right-hander Zach Williamsen (3-2) tallied the win on the mound for the Mavs after surrendering four earned runs on eight hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.
