Angus Stoudt scored a personal-best 3,588 points to hold the lead after the first day of decathlon competition at the UC Riverside Spring Track Classic on Thursday afternoon.

Stoudt's score of 3,588 points through the first five events is 30 more than his previous first-day best. He leads Long Beach State's Herman Day by 102 points heading into the final five events tomorrow.

North Dakota State has four other decathletes currently among the top 10 in the standings – sophomore
Matt Neururer in sixth (3,227 points), junior
Brock Larson in seventh (3,168), freshman
Daniel Asa in eighth (3,140), and senior
Beau Gagnon in ninth (3,074).

Stoudt opened with the third-fastest 100m dash time in the field at 11.63 seconds and used strong performances in the shot put, high jump and 400m dash to vault into first place. He threw an outdoor-best 42-05.50 (12.94m) in the shot put for the best mark in the field, cleared a personal-best 6-05.00 (1.96m) in the high jump, and closed with the second-fastest 400m dash time at 51.47.

Neururer clocked 50.83 in the 400m for the fastest time among the decathletes.

The decathlon is scheduled to resume at UC Riverside at 1 p.m. (CT) on Friday. The majority of the meet's events are scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
