MACOMB, Ill. – The North Dakota State baseball team (5-16, 1-7 Summit League) dropped the second game of a three-game Summit League series at Western Illinois (7-14, 4-4 Summit League), 3-1, on Saturday, March 28, at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.
The Bison and Leathernecks are scheduled to wrap-up the series on Sunday, March 29, at noon.
Drew Fearing paced NDSU at the plate, going 1-for-3 with the Bison's lone RBI of the game, while
Ben Petersen extended his team-high hitting streak to nine games after collecting one hit.
Right-hander
Reed Pfannenstein (0-3) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bison after allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking one in six innings of work.
Western Illinois gained an early 2-0 lead after JJ Reimer hit a two RBI double in the bottom of the first inning.
The Bison cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the second when Fearing drove in
Danny Regan with an RBI infield single.
The Leathernecks responded in the bottom of the fourth, increasing their lead to 3-1 on a Colton Pogue RBI single through the left side.
Reimer led Western Illinois at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
Western Illinois left-handed pitcher Tom Constand (1-4) picked up his first win of the season after surrendering just one earned run on four hits while fanning three and walking four in five and one-third innings. Tyler Owings secured the save for the Leathernecks.
