KNOXVILLE, Tenn.--North Dakota State University senior pitcher
Krista Menke spun her second no-hitter of the season and third of her career in a 3-0 eight-inning win over Purdue University in the first game Saturday, March 7, at the University of Tennessee Invitational played at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. The Bison fell 14-3 in five to the 11th-ranked Volunteers in the second game.
North Dakota State (14-5) is scheduled to compete at the Indiana University Hoosier Classic on March 13-15 in Bloomington.
NDSU scored three times in the top of the eighth. Speed-up rules put a runner at second base starting in the extra innings.
Joei Samper moved from second to third on a
Katie Shoultz sacrifice bunt.
Logan Moreland broke the deadlock with a two-out infield single to score Samper.
Cheyenne Garcia knocked in Moreland with a double to left, while Garcia scored on an
Alyssa Reina base hit.
Then Menke, a 5-foot-11 righthander from Friend, Neb., took over to close out the bottom of the eighth. She retired the Boilermakers (11-6) on a fly out, pop out and her 12th strikeout of the game.
Menke (10-2) threw 116 pitches including 85 strikes and issued just one walk. The shutout was her third of the season and reached double-figure strikeouts for the eighth time.
Lilly Fecho (9-3) picked up the loss for Purdue. Fecho struck out 10, allowed eight hits and walked two.
Amanda Grable and Reina each finished with two hits for NDSU.
Taylo Koenig and Gretchen Aucoin each had three RBI as Tennessee clubbed the Bison 14-3. Aucoin (6-2) struck out four and walked two over the first 3-2/3 innings to pick up the win for the Volunteers.
NDSU trailed 7-0 before Grable hit a two-run home run to breakup the shutout bid. It was the second homer of the season for Grable. Menke and
Jacquelyn Sertic pitched for the Bison with Menke tagged for the loss. The pair combined to walk six and strike out four.
