FORT WAYNE, Ind.--
Krista Menke recorded a perfect game in a pair of shutout performances and the offense rolled up 28 runs as North Dakota State University defeated host Fort Wayne 18-0 and 10-0 in a Summit League softball doubleheader played Saturday, April 18, at the IPFW Softball Field.
NDSU (34-7, 12-2 Summit League) and Fort Wayne (3-36, 2-12 Summit League) are scheduled to close out the three-game series at 9:30 a.m. Central on Sunday, April 19.
Menke, 5-foot-11 senior righthander from Friend, Neb., struck out 12 of 15 batters to notch her first career perfect game, her third no-hitter of the season and fourth career no-hitter. She threw 49 strikes out of 65 pitches in the opener. Menke struck out the side in the second, third and fifth innings. She recorded the eighth perfect game in program history and first since
Amber Garrett turned in a seven-inning gem against Drake University (2-26-06).
NDSU collected 15 hits in the first game including seven for extra bases.
Maritza Lopez-Portillo smacked a two-run home run to start the six-run second inning, while
Alyssa Reina slammed the door with a grand slam home run. It was Lopez-Portillo's fourth home run of the season, while Reina's first collegiate slam was her 11th overall. Lopez-Portillo would finish with a career-high four runs scored as 10 players crossed the plate.
The Bison scored four runs in each of the next three innings to blow the game open.
Cheyenne Garcia stroked a two-run home run in the third inning, while
Katie Shoultz delivered a RBI single to extend the lead to 10-0. Shoultz went 3-for-4 with a season-high four RBI and three runs. Seven different NDSU players knocked in a run.
Logan Moreland drove in a pair of runs, while
Amanda Grable and Shoultz each had a RBI in the fourth inning to widen the margin to 14-0. NDSU closed out the scoring in the fifth with
Bre Beatty and Lopez-Portillo both spanking RBI doubles and Shoultz knocking in a pair of runs.
The 18 runs were the most scored by North Dakota State since Feb. 22, 2014, against Nicholls State. NDSU claimed 15 hits as
Jenna Isbel, Garcia, Reina, Lopez-Portillo all had a pair to join Shoultz in the multi-hit department.
Menke (25-2) continued on the mound in game two for NDSU and with the same results. She allowed just an Emily Olszewski lead-off double in the top of the fourth inning. Including the last inning against South Dakota State (4-12-15), Menke retired 20 straight batters and didn't allow a hit for 8-2/3 innings. She has allowed only three hits over the last 23 innings pitched.
With three shutouts in a row, Menke has 10 shutouts this season and 30 in her career. Game two represented her fourth one-hitter this spring and the eighth of her career. Menke struck out 14 and issued no walks in the second game. She has 20 double-figure strikeout games this season and 27 in her career. Menke became the third NDSU pitcher to reach 300 strikeouts in a season now with 301, joining the select grouping of All-American
Julie Fromm (342, 1999 / 305, 2000) and all-region
Whitney Johnson (324, 2010).
The top of the NDSU order went 9-for-12 with six runs scored and six runs batted in. Lead-off hitter Garcia, a junior second baseman from Vista, Calif., went 2-for-4 including her team-leading 12th home run in the top of the sixth inning. She scored twice and drove in a pair of runs.
Grable, a senior third baseman from Santee, Calif., led the 14-hit Bison offense with a career best 4-for-4 effort at the plate. She recorded a career-high three stolen bases and added a pair of RBI.
Moreland, a junior shortstop from Woodland, Calif., was equal to the task with a pair of doubles and single in four at-bats. Moreland scored three times and had two RBI.
Jackie Stifter rapped a two-run double in the sixth inning, while Reina added a sacrifice fly in the first inning for NDSU. Stifter has six doubles over the last four games for the Bison.
