LAWRENCE, Kan. – The North Dakota State University women's soccer team and NSCAA preseason No. 23-ranked Kansas played to a 2-2 draw in an exhibition match played at Rock Chalk Park in front of 584 spectators on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 16.
"It was a good result, as we just went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in country," NDSU head coach
Mark Cook said. "On the day, Kansas was the better team, but we competed for 90 minutes and showed the type of team we are."
Mallory Fenske and
Gaby Arnquist netted the two goals for the Bison, while
Lauren Miller dished out two assists, and goalkeeper
Sierra Bonham made a match-high nine saves.
The Jayhawks struck first in the match, taking an early 1-0 lead after Grace Hagan found the back of the net in the 10th-minute. North Dakota State evened the match, 1-1, in the 29th-minute after Fenske scored from 10 yards out on a feed from Miller. Hagan put KU back in front, 2-1, when she tallied her second goal of the match right before the end of the first-half in the 45th-minute.
The Bison leveled the match, 2-2, 19 minutes into the second-half after Arnquist scored off a corner-kick from Miller in the 64th-minute.
Bonham made four crucial saves in goal in the final 26 minutes of the second-half, helping preserve the away exhibition result for NDSU.
For the match, Kansas outshot NDSU, 33-14, but the Bison posted a 9-6 edge over the Jayhawks in corner kicks taken.
North Dakota State is scheduled to begin regular season action next Friday, Aug. 21, when it travels to Minneapolis, Minn., for a 7 p.m. match against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
