AMES, Iowa – Junior
Amy Yang scored two goals, including the game-winning goal in overtime, to help the North Dakota State University women's soccer team (4-3-0) defeat Iowa State (4-4-0), 3-2, on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 13, at the Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames.
The win was the first-ever over a Big 12 Conference opponent in NDSU soccer history.
"It was a really good effort by our team today. I was disappointed we let a two-goal lead slip away, but we bounced back well in overtime to get the win," NDSU head coach
Mark Cook said. "Iowa State is a very good team, and this was a great win for our program."
After
Lauren Miller was fouled just inside the box four minutes into overtime to draw a penalty-kick, Yang stepped up to the spot and powered the kick into the back of the net, giving the Bison the win.
Senior goalkeeper
Sierra Bonham tallied a match-high 10 saves and went the full 90-plus minutes in goal to pick up the win and improve to 4-3-0 on the season.
Miller provided North Dakota State an early 1-0 advantage over the Cyclones after she netted her team and Summit League-high sixth goal of the season on a free-kick from 19 yards out in the eighth-minute.
Yang increased the Bison lead to 2-0 when she scored off a
Britney Monteon assist in the 55th-minute.
Iowa State fought back, though, scoring goals in the 62nd and 81st minutes to knot the match, 2-2, and eventually force overtime.
North Dakota State is scheduled to face Northern Arizona on Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. MT (9 p.m. CT) in the opening match of the NAU Mountain Classic in Flagstaff, Ariz.
