Unattached NDSU Wrestlers Clingenpeel, Smith Claim First Place at Husky Open

ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- Unattached North Dakota State University wrestlers 165 Colton Clingenpeel and 141 Nate Smith each earned first place, while unattached 125 Paul Bianchi was runner-up at the St. Cloud State/Holiday Inn Husky Open on Saturday, Dec. 10, at Halenbeck Hall. Five out of nine wrestlers entered in the event placed in the top six.

Clingenpeel, a freshman from Council Bluffs, Iowa, posted a pair of major decisions including 13-4 win over St. Cloud State's Devin Fitzpatrick in the 165-pound championship match. He also posted an overtime win while going 3-0 at the Husky Open. Clingenpeel improved to 9-6 with three major decisions and two pins.

Smith, a freshman from Eagle, Wis., open with his first pin of the season and followed with a pair of close decisions to claim the 141-pound weight class at the tournament. Smith is now 10-5.

Bianchi, a freshman from Two Rivers, Wis., placed in the top six for the fourth straight tournament with the second place showing at the Husky Open. He went 2-1 at the tournament and improved to 11-3 with three pins, one tech fall and a pin.

Unattached freshmen, 165 Nick Knutson and 184 Jonah Lange placed fifth and sixth, respectively.
