FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State University women's basketball team cruised to a 93-44 victory over the Mayville State University Comets on Monday, Dec. 12, inside the Scheels Center at the Sanford Health Athletic Complex in front of 312 spectators.
With the win, the Bison improve to 2-9 on the season.
Senior Brianna Jones compiled a double-double with a career-high 20 points to go along with 18 rebounds, leading five NDSU players in double figures. Junior Taylor Thunstedt netted 19 points and dished out a career-best eight assists, while sophomore Kennedy Childers scored 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field.
Freshman Sarah Jacobson posted season highs in points (14) and assists (8), and fellow freshman Reilly Jacobson posted a double-double with 11 points and a season-best 12 boards, rounding out the North Dakota State double figure scoring.
The Bison shot a shot 44 percent from the field and went 21-of-28 at the free-throw line for 75 percent.
NDSU controlled the glass in the game, outrebounding Mayville State, 57-32, and outscored the Comets in the paint, 44-16, and off turnovers, 21-5. The Bison also only turned the ball over six times and dished out 22 assists, while forcing MSU into 20 miscues.
North Dakota State started the game on a 12-1 run and never looked back. Sarah Jacobson opened the game with a three, before a layup from Reilly Jacobson and trey from Thunstedt increased the NDSU advantage to 8-0 with 9:02 to go in the first quarter.
After Mayville State's Andi Gayner made one of two free throws, Jones converted a pair of foul shots, and Thunstedt drove to the hoop for a layup, ballooning the Bison lead to 12-1 with 7:20 remaining in the opening stanza. The Comets would get no closer than eight the remainder of the contest.
NDSU held Mayville State scoreless the final 6:31 of the fourth quarter.
The 49-point win marks the largest margin of victory for North Dakota State since the 2013-14 season when the Bison defeated the Comets by 50 points, 112-62.
Claire Blascziek paced Mayville State with 22 points.
The Comets shot just 26 percent from the field and 53 percent from the free-throw line in the contest.
North Dakota State is scheduled to travel to Edinburg, Texas, Dec. 19-20 for the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Battle on the Border to close out non-league play. The Bison are slated to battle the host Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros Dec. 19 before taking on the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos Dec. 20.
