BEAUMONT, Texas – The North Dakota State University baseball team swept both games of a doubleheader at Lamar on Saturday, Feb. 27, at Vincent-Beck Stadium, winning game one 7-6 and taking the nightcap 3-0.
The victories improved the Bison to 5-1 overall while Lamar dropped to 6-2 on the season.
Sophomore
Drew Fearing paced the NDSU offense in the first game of the day, going 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored, while fellow sophomore
Brayden Resch went 2-for-4 and drove in a run.
NDSU left-hander
Chris Choles picked up his first career win after tossing 2.1 innings in relief in game one. Choles surrendered just two hits and tallied two strikeouts over 37 pitches. Junior
Dalton England secured his first save of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts.
Mason Pierzchalski, Fearing and
Jayse McLean each compiled two hits to pace the Bison in game two.
Bison right-hander
Reed Pfannenstein pitched six strong innings in the nightcap for his first win of the season. The Cold Spring, Minn., native scattered four hits with three strikeouts and just one walk on 84 pitches. Freshman
Jordan Harms threw three innings in relief and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth inning to tally his first collegiate save.
North Dakota State trailed 6-2 in the opener before scoring five runs late in the game. Resch hit a two-run single up the middle in the seventh to plate Fearing and
Alec Abercrombie, before a Lamar throwing error and two RBI single through the left side off the bat of Fearing allowed the Bison to take a 7-6 lead in the eighth.
Lamar threatened in the bottom of the ninth after Bryndan Arredondo hit a one-out double to left, but England tallied a strikeout before Bison catcher
Juan Gamez caught Arredondo stealing third to seal the NDSU win.
Arredondo led the Cardinals in the first game, going 4-for-5 at the plate, while reliever Travis Moore (0-1) took the loss on the mound.
The Bison scored a pair of runs in the sixth and added another in the seventh to take a 3-0 lead over the Cardinals in game two of the twin bill.
Danny Regan doubled down the right field line to score Gamez, and
Andy Wicklund singled through the left side to driver in Regan in the sixth, before Pierzchalski smacked a single to centerfield, scoring Fearing in the seventh.
Jacoby Middleton paced the Lamar offense in the second game, going 2-for-4 at the plate. LU starter Fernando Martinez (0-1) took the loss after allowing two earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and four walks in 5.2 innings.
North Dakota State is scheduled to wrap-up the four-game series at Lamar with a single game at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 28.
