BEAUMONT, Texas – The North Dakota State University baseball team defeated the Lamar University Cardinals, 7-5, in the series finale of a four-game series on Sunday, Feb. 28, at Vincent-Beck Stadium in Beaumont.
With the victory, the Bison won the series against the Cardinals, 3-1, and improved to 6-1 overall. Lamar fell to 6-3 on the season.
Jayse McLean went a perfect 4-of-4 at the plate with a double and two RBIs, and
Jeron Terres drove in three runs on a pinch-hit triple, leading the Bison offense.
Brayden Resch,
Mason Pierzchalski and
Alec Abercrombie all tallied two hits in the game.
NDSU right-hander
Brian VanderWoude (2-0) picked up his second win of the season after allowing just one hit in two innings of relief, while
Sean Terres secured his second save of 2016 after holding Lamar scoreless the final two innings. He struck out two, walked two and didn't allow a hit.
After Lamar plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead, NDSU responded in the top of the third, tying the contest, 2-2, with a pair of runs on McLean's two RBI double to left center.
The Bison took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth when
Drew Fearing singled to right field, driving in Abercrombie, but the Cardinals answered with two runs in the bottom-half of the frame to gain a 4-3 advantage.
Lamar led 5-3 before NDSU scored four runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead for good. After McLean singled with one-out in the inning,
Andy Wicklund worked a walk and Abercrombie hit a bunt single to the pitcher, loading the bases.
Jeron Terres, making his first plate appearance of the game, hit the first pitch he saw to deep left center for a bases-clearing triple to give the Bison a 6-5 lead. Resch made it 7-5 after he hit a RBI single through the right side during the next at bat.
Jake Nash went 3-of-5 in the batter's box to lead Lamar, while Galen Andrews (1-1) took the loss on the mound for the Cardinals after giving up four earned runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.
North Dakota State is scheduled to take on Maine on Friday, March 4, at 3 p.m. ET (2 p.m. CT) in the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla.
