NDSU Comeback Stops Binghamton 8-4, Bison Top Terps 10-1 at Maryland Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — North Dakota State rallied to defeat Binghamton University 8-4 and pounded out 14 hits to beat host Maryland 10-1 on Friday, March 18, at the Maryland Invitational.

NDSU (16-11) is scheduled to play UMass (6-14) at 10:15 a.m. and Ball State (13-14) at 2:45 p.m. Central Time Saturday, March 19.
 
Binghamton (7-8) jumped out to a 4-1 lead after four innings in the first game. Kate Richard hit a solo home run in the top of the second, Lisa Cadogan's sacrifice bunt produced a run in the third and Gabby Brachhi's two-run single provided the scoring in the fourth.
 
However, the Bison sent 12 batters to the plate and rallied with six in the bottom of the fifth inning to regain control. NDSU took advantage of six hits, three errors, two walks and a hit batter.
 
Cheyenne Garcia laced a RBI double and a Binghamton error on the play chased home another run. Alyssa Reina stroked a run-scoring single and Jackie Stifter had an RBI single.
 
Stifter closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Stifter went 2-for-2 with three RBI. She was hit by pitch for the ninth time this season, one off the school record of 10 set by Jenina Ortega in 2014. Katie Shoultz went 2-for-3, while Zoe Stavrou and Reina each scored two runs.
 
Kaitlyn "KK" Leddy, Katie Thun and Jacquelyn Sertic pitched for North Dakota State. Thun (1-0) worked 1.1 innings to pick up the win, while Sertic pitched two innings of scoreless relief to earn her first save. Thun picked up her first win since May 2, 2014. The trio combined to strike out seven, walk six and allow six hits.
 
Sarah Miller (5-5), Makenzie Golumba and Cara Martin pitched for Binghamton with Miller recording the loss. The threesome combined to allow nine hits, walk eight and strike out two.
 
North Dakota State pounded out 14 hits and scored two runs in five of six innings to defeat the host Terps (7-19) in the final game at Maryland Stadium.
 
Moreland went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, two runs batted in and a triple to spark the offense, while Stavrou went 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI. Maritza Lopez-Portillo and Garcia both had a double and single, while Shoultz added a pair of base hits.
 
Sertic (11-5) recorded the win for NDSU. She struck out seven, allowed four hits and walked two.
 
Brenna Nation (2-12) and Sami Main pitched for Maryland with Nation picking up the loss. Hannah Dewey had a RBI double for the Terps.
