HONOLULU, Hawaii -- No. 22-ranked Baylor University held off a seventh inning by North Dakota State University to pull out a 4-2 win on Wednesday, March 9, in the first game of the Hawai'i Spring Fling at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
NDSU (11-9) is scheduled to play Cal (10-6) at 7:30 p.m. CT Thursday, March 10.
Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, North Dakota State scored twice and had the game-tying runs on base.
Julia Luciano reached on an error and moved to third on
Maritza Lopez-Portillo's double to right. Pinch-hitter
Bre Beatty drilled the first pitch down the left field line to chase home Luciano and Lopez-Portillo.
With Beatty on second,
Logan Moreland moved to first on a two-out walk. The game ended on a ground out to third.
Baylor (15-5) scored first. Linsey Hays led off with a single up the middle, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and went to third on an Ari Hawkins single. Caitlin Charlton singled through the left side to drive in Hays.
Hays took care of the scoring in the sixth for the Bears with a three-run home to left center. Kyla Walker, Hays and Charlton each had two hits.
Heather Stearns (7-2) recorded the win for Baylor. Stearns worked the first six innings, allowing four hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Kendall Potts finished with a pair of strikeouts and walk in the last frame.
Jacquelyn Sertic (7-3) picked up the loss. Sertic walked one and struck out one.
Cheyenne Garcia, Luciano joined Beatty and Lopez-Portillo with doubles for NDSU.
