INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.--
Logan Moreland went 6-for-8 with a pair of home runs, six runs batted in and five runs scored as North Dakota State University defeated IUPUI 14-2 and 8-3 in a Summit League doubleheader played Saturday, April 2, at the IUPUI Softball Complex. The Bison have won 8 of their last 10 games.
NDSU (20-12, 2-0 Summit League) and IUPUI (10-20, 0-4 SL) are scheduled to close out the three-game series at 10 a.m. Central Time Sunday, April 3.
North Dakota State's offense collected 31 hits and nine for extra-bases over two games Saturday including a season-high 18 hits in the opener. Meanwhile, NDSU's pitching combined to limit the host Jaguars to only six hits.
The Bison scored in six of seven innings in game one starting with
Alyssa Reina's two-run homer to left field in the top of the first. It was Reina's third home run of the season.
Jenna Isbel doubled with two-outs in the second inning to tack on another run, while Moreland led off the third with a home run to left center and
Zoe Stavrou added a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 5-0.
The NDSU margin grew to 9-2 after five innings. Moreland and Reina each had RBI singles in the top of the fourth. IUPUI answered twice in the bottom the fourth with an Ali Mosier solo homer and Maggie Good's run-scoring double. In the fifth, pinch-hitter
Bre Beatty delivered a RBI single and Moreland knocked in a run with a ground out.
The Bison closed out the scoring with five runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Julia Luciano and Reina both drilled two-run doubles, while
Cheyenne Garcia added a RBI double. Ten different NDSU players had at least one hit led by Reina and Moreland, who each had three. Reina drove in five runs and Moreland collected three RBI.
Jacquelyn Sertic (14-5) took advantage of the offense and struck out a career-high 14 batters with three walks. Nickole Finch (2-3), Erica Tharp and Maggie Armstrong pitched for the Jaguars with Finch picking up the loss. The trio combined to strike out six and walk six.
North Dakota State continued to score in the second game and jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings. Moreland singled with one out, stole second and scored on Garcia's base hit in the first.
The Bison struck for four runs in the second inning. Luciano started with a RBI double and scored on an illegal pitch. Moreland closed out the scoring with a two-run home run, her second on the day and fifth of the season.
Jackie Stifter doubled to lead off the third, moved up on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 6-0.
IUPUI trimmed the deficit to 5-1 in the fourth inning on Taylor Chitwood's RBI double. The Bison widened the gap to 7-1 when Moreland singled to right to score Isbel in the top of the sixth. Chitwood continued to be bothersome in the bottom of the sixth, this time hitting a two-run home run as the Jaguars cut the lead to 7-3. Isbel's RBI single scored pinch-runner
Joei Samper closed out the scoring for NDSU in the seventh.
Katilynn "KK" Leddy (5-7) worked six innings to record her first win for the Bison since March 5 against Louisiana-Monroe. Leddy struck out seven, walked four and allowed three hits. Sertic struck out one in an inning of relief. Brooke Boetjer (6-9) picked up the loss for IUPUI. Boetjer struck out seven and walked three.
NDSU finished with 13 hits including a 3-for-3 showing from Moreland.
Katie Shoultz, Garcia and Isbel each added two hits.
