FARGO, N.D.--
Logan Moreland,
Alyssa Reina and
Maritza Lopez-Portillo each hit home runs as North Dakota State University defeated Western Illinois 7-4 to sweep the Summit League softball series and reach 30 wins for the 10th straight season on Sunday, April 24, at the Ellig Sports Complex. The Bison extended their Summit League regular season win streak to 22 games.
NDSU (30-13, 12-0 SL) is scheduled to play No. 23/24-ranked Minnesota (32-12, 13-3 Big Ten) in a non-league doubleheader at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, in Minneapolis. The Bison then travel to South Dakota (13-32, 7-5 SL) for a three-game league series on April 30 and May 1 in Vermillion.
North Dakota State and Western Illinois (11-31, 4-8 SL) played a little home run derby and combined for five home runs Sunday. Out of 16 hits, the Bison and Leathernecks had a total of nine extra-base hits.
Reina, a redshirt junior from Auburn, Calif., was the NDSU ring-leader. She went 3-for-3 with her sixth home run of the season, belted a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Reina finished the series 8-for-10 with three home runs, three doubles and a triple. She collected six RBI and scored four runs. Reina moved to No. 6 all-time with 28 home runs.
NDSU grabbed a brief 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Reina and
Julia Luciano lined back-to-back doubles.
However, Western Illinois bounced back with a bang in the top of the fourth when Hailey Duwa and Rachel Beatty launched back-to-back home runs to take a 2-1 lead and chase NDSU starter
Jacquelyn Sertic out of the game.
The WIU lead was short-lived.
Jenna Isbel doubled to left center. With two outs, Moreland lined a home run off the tall chain link fence in right that skipped on the running track to put the Bison ahead 3-2. It was Moreland's team-leading 10th home run of the season. She is tied for eighth with 25 career homers. Moreland finished with a pair of hits.
The NDSU thunder continued in the bottom of the fifth. Reina led off with a solo home run to left and into the wind. Luciano walked,
Jackie Stifter singled and moved into scoring position on
Bre Beatty's sacrifice bunt. Lopez-Portillo lined a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence to extend the lead to 7-2. Stifter again etched her name into the record books after she was hit by pitch for the 24th time in her career. She is tied with Lynnae Foshag (2004-07) on the all-time charts.
Western Illinois made things interesting in the top of the seventh inning. Karissa Kouchis and Tierney Bottino each had RBI singles to cut the deficit to 7-4. With a pair of baserunners in scoring position, Bison reliever Kaitlyn "KK" Leddy worked out of the jam to end the threat. Kouchis and Beatty each had two hits.
Leddy, a freshman right-hander from Middleburg, Fla., picked up her second win in relief on the weekend to improve to 9-7. She allowed three hits, struck out two and walked one over the final 3-1/3 innings. Sertic allowed three hits, struck out two and walked two over the first 3-2/3 innings.
Kacyee Hart, Emily Ira (5-14) and Megan Lotarski pitched for Western Illinois. The trio combined to strike out two and walk two.
