Jacquelyn Sertic struck out 13 and tossed a two-hit shutout in game one and
Logan Moreland smacked her 11th home run in the second to highlight North Dakota State University's 3-0, 8-2 Summit League softball doubleheader sweep of South Dakota on Friday, April 29, at Nygaard Field. The Bison extended their Summit League regular season win streak to 24 games.
NDSU (32-13, 14-0 SL) and South Dakota (13-34, 7-7 SL) are scheduled to close out the league three-game series at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 30.
Sertic, a sophomore right-hander from Sparks, Nev., allowed the Coyotes just a lead-off single to Yvonne Minogue in the first and a base hit to Katie Cochran in the fourth. She faced 24 batters during the opener and reached double-figure strikeouts for the fourth time this season. Her 13 strikeouts were one off a career-high. Sertic improved to 21-6 overall.
North Dakota State scored in the first inning in both ends of the doubleheader. The Bison are 23-2 when scoring in the opening frame.
Katie Shoultz opened with an infield single, stole second and moved to third on
Logan Moreland's base hit. Shoultz scored on
Cheyenne Garcia's ground out.
Alyssa Reina reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on
Zoe Stavrou's RBI single to left to make it 2-0. The Bison notched five of their seven hits in the first inning.
South Dakota starter Madison Frain (10-13) settled down after the first, allowing just two hits. She walked four and struck out three.
NDSU tacked on an insurance run in the top of the fifth inning. Reina walked and score on Stavrou's RBI double to right center. Shoultz and Stavrou each finished with two hits.
North Dakota State jumped on USD early in the second game, scoring three times in the first inning and tacked on four runs in the second.
Moreland, a senior shortstop from Woodland, Calif., went 3-for-4 with three RBI. She doubled home a run in the first inning and smacked on a two-run home run to center in the second inning.
Jackie Stifter closed out the scoring in the second inning with a two-run double to center. Moreland extended her hitting streak to 20 games.
Reina close out the scoring with a RBI single to right in the seventh inning. Reina has reached base in 23 straight games.
NDSU freshman righty Kaitlyn "KK" Leddy settled down after rocky first inning to earn her fourth straight win and improve to 10-7. Leddy retired 11 of 12 batters during one stretch to keep USD off-stride. She scattered seven hits, struck out two and walked one.
Katie Cochran went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI, while Kayla Fields went 2-for-3 with an RBI to pace the Coyotes. Rachel Cue (1-17) and Megan Green pitched for USD with Cue picking up the loss. Green allowed six hits, struck out two and walked one in seven innings of relief.
