FARGO, N.D. - North Dakota State wrapped up its third week of spring football with an hourlong scrimmage at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome on Saturday, April 9. It was the ninth of 15 scheduled practices.
Sophomore quarterback
Easton Stick ran the No. 1 offense on four drives, junior
Cole Davis led the No. 2 unit on four drives, and third-string quarterback
James Hendricks ran two series for the offense.
Head coach
Chris Klieman was impressed with the steady progression of NDSU's younger players this week, including linebacker
Dan Marlette, tight end
Ben Ellefson and safety
Jaxon Brown, who was in on a team-high five tackles and deflected a pass that was intercepted by
Matt Plank near the goal line.
Redshirt freshman
Demaris Purifoy took the majority of carries at running back. He ran 13 times for 33 yards including a touchdown with the No. 2 offense while
King Frazier ran five times for 21 yards with the No. 1 unit.
Lance Dunn had a 22-yard run called back by penalty but later took a 34-yard passing play to the 10 to set up a touchdown by wide receiver
Dallas Freeman on a jet sweep the next play. Stick threw two touchdown passes to
Eric Perkins from 12 yards and
RJ Urzendowski from 11 yards.
Punter
Ian Gallagher averaged 47.6 yards on 10 punts including a long of 67 yards that was downed at the 3-yard line by Brown and long snapper
James Fisher. Kicker Cam Pederson converted 7 of 10 field goals with a long of 45 and two misses from 47.
Area coaches were on hand to observe the practice as part of NDSU's annual spring coaching clinic, and the Midwest Football Officials Alliance also conducted an officiating clinic prior to working the scrimmage.North Dakota State has three practices next week and two the following week before the annual Green and Gold Spring Game scheduled for Saturday, April 23.
