FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The North Dakota State University baseball team dropped a Summit League doubleheader at IPFW on Saturday, May 14, losing game one, 3-1, before falling in game two, 3-2.
NDSU falls to 27-23 overall and 10-16 in Summit League play with the pair of setbacks, while IPFW improves to 26-24 on the season and 10-16 in league action.
Sophomore
Drew Fearing tallied a combined four hits on the day, including his ninth double of the season, to lead North Dakota State at the plate. Fellow sophomore
Jayse McLean added three hits and drove in NDSU's only run in the first game, while seniors
Paul Funk and
Taylor Sanders compiled two hits.
Sophomore left-handed pitcher
Blake Stockert (2-5) struck out a career-high nine batters with just one walk in the first contest, but suffered the loss after surrendering three earned runs on four hits.
Senior southpaw
Parker Trewin went a season-high seven innings and allowed just one earned run on six hits with six strikeouts and only one walk in game two. Right-hander
Sean Terres (1-2) took the loss for North Dakota State after allowing two earned runs on no hits with four walks and two strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth inning.
After IPFW gained a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning in the opening contest of the day, the Bison tied the game in the third on a McLean RBI single to center field.
The Mastodons took the lead for good in the bottom of the third though, scoring two runs on Greg Kaiser's home run to left field.
In game two, NDSU and IPFW were tied, 1-1, until the Bison were able to gain a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning when
Brayden Resch crossed home plate on a Mastodon throwing error.
The Bison maintained the lead until IPFW scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a bases loaded walk and walk-off RBI single from Jackson Boyce.
Kaiser paced the Mastodons in both games with a combined three hits, including a homer and triple, to go along with two RBIs.
NDSU and IPFW are scheduled to conclude the three-game series with a single game at noon CT (1 p.m. ET) Sunday, May 15, in Fort Wayne.
