FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State University baseball team coasted to a 10-1 win over the Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers on Tuesday, May 3, in front of 519 spectators at Newman Outdoor Field.
With the win, NDSU improves to 24-19 overall, while Concordia falls to 19-15 on the season.
Redshirt junior
JT Core went 3-for-4 at the plate with three doubles and two RBIs to lead the Bison. Senior
Taylor Sanders also tallied three hits at the plate to go along with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in, while junior
Ben Petersen hit his team and Summit League-high fourth triple of the season.
NDSU left-handed pitcher
Zach Mayo (2-4) earned the win on the mound after tossing 3 2/3 scoreless innings and allowing no hits on 52 pitches with a career-high nine strikeouts and just one walk.
Senior catcher
Juan Gamez threw a scoreless ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts in his first career appearance on the mound for the Bison.
NDSU took control of the game early, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning to gain a 6-0 lead. Resch scored the Bison's first run of the contest on a sacrifice fly, before Sanders doubled to left field and Pierzchalski singled to center, plating two more runs to increase the lead the 3-0. Core made it 4-0 after he belted an RBI double down the right field line before Busch capped the inning with a two-run single to left field.
After the Cobbers scored a run in the top of the second to cut the Bison lead to 6-1, NDSU responded with one run in the fifth, two runs in the sixth and one run in the eighth to balloon its advantage to 10-1.
Left fielder Aaron Green led Concordia at the plate with a double and RBI.
Pitcher Fletcher Andel (1-2) took the loss for the Cobbers after giving up seven runs, one earned, on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 4 1/3 innings.
North Dakota State is scheduled to travel to Grand Forks on Wednesday, May 4, for a contest against the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Kraft Memorial Field.
