FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State University baseball team used a three-run seventh inning to rally and defeat the Omaha Mavericks, 4-3, in the series finale of a three-game Summit League series on Sunday, May 8, in front of 236 spectators at Newman Outdoor Field.

With the win, NDSU improves to 26-21 overall and 10-14 in Summit League action, while Omaha falls to 24-22 on the season and 14-10 in league play.

The Bison trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh before plating three runs on three hits to gain their first lead of the game. Paul Funk drove in the opening run of the inning on an RBI ground out to second base, cutting the Bison deficit to 3-2, before Ben Petersen smacked an RBI single through the left side to tie the contest. Brayden Resch gave NDSU its first lead of the game during the next at bat when he hit a single just out of the reach of Omaha shortstop Riley Herold's glove, allowing Petersen to cross home plate.

The Mavericks attempted to mount a comeback in the eighth inning after centerfielder Cole Gruber hit a lead-off ground-rule double down the left field line and advanced to third on a ground out, but NDSU right-handed reliever Brian VanderWoude pitched out of the jam and stranded Gruber at third with a ground out and a fly out to preserve the Bison lead.

After Omaha left-fielder Adam Caniglia led-off the ninth inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, NDSU right-hander Sean Terres entered the contest and sealed the Bison win with a pop out and strikeout.

Petersen went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI and stole his 14th base of the season to lead NDSU, while Resch added a pair of hits and an RBI. Mason Pierzchalski tallied a double, and Jayse McLean and Funk each drove in a run.

VanderWoude earned his team-high seventh win of the season and improved to 7-2 overall after allowing no earned runs on two hits in 2 1/3 innings with a pair of strikeouts and a walk. Terres secured his team-best sixth save after getting the final two outs in the ninth-inning.

NDSU freshman starting pitcher Jordan Harms struck out a career-high eight batters and walked only two while allowing three earned runs on three hits in six innings.

Designated hitter Ryan Cate compiled two RBIs and a hit to lead the Mavericks, while Gruber, third baseman Clayton Taylor and Caniglia each tallied doubles.

Omaha reliever Brad Olsen (0-1) took the loss on the mound after giving up the eventual game-winning run.

North Dakota State is scheduled to host Concordia-Moorhead in a non-conference game on Tuesday, May 10, at 6:30 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field.
