NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – A stellar defensive effort and a second-half goal from
Amy Yang lifted the North Dakota State University women's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout victory at CSUN on Friday, Aug. 26, at Matador Soccer Field in Northridge, California.
With the win, NDSU improves to 2-1-0 overall, while CSUN falls to 1-1-1 on the season.
Yang, a senior midfielder from St. Paul, Minn., scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 59th-minute of the match. After fellow senior
Lauren Miller's strike wasn't saved cleanly by Matador goalkeeper Jovani McCaskill, Yang pounced on the deflected shot and smashed it into the back of the net from five yards out.
It was Yang's second goal of the season and her second game-winning goal in as many matches. The feed from Miller was her second assist of 2016.
CSUN nearly scored an equalizer less than 10 minutes after Yang's goal, but North Dakota State freshman goalkeeper
Monica Polgar made a diving save on a shot from Breanna McCallum to keep the Bison in front.
The Matadors threatened again in the 79th-minute, but the NDSU defense blocked both shot attempts to keep the Bison lead intact.
Polgar (2-1-0), a native of Cupertino, Calif., made a match-high three saves between the posts, earning her second win and clean sheet of the season.
McCaskill suffered the loss in-goal for CSUN to fall to 1-1-1 on the season.
North Dakota State is scheduled to close out its California road trip with a match at UC Riverside on Sunday, Aug. 28, at 9 p.m. CT (7 p.m. PT).
