North Dakota State Visits South Dakota in Men’s Hoops Wednesday

The Game: The North Dakota State men's basketball team (11-5, 3-0) goes on the road to take on the South Dakota Coyotes (12-7, 3-1) in Vermillion, S.D., on Wednesday, Jan. 11. The Bison have won five of their last six games, but have not won at South Dakota since 2014.

About South Dakota: The Coyotes went 9-6 in non-conference play before opening Summit League action with a 3-1 mark -- with wins over Omaha, Denver and IUPUI and a one-point loss at South Dakota State. South Dakota is a perfect 8-0 at home this season inside the brand new Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
                Sophomore guard Matt Mooney leads the Coyotes with 15.6 points per game. Junior guard Trey Dickerson is averaging 10.7 points and 3.4 assists per contest. USD does a majority of its scoring inside the three-point arc, as the Coyotes rank in the bottom 100 schools in Division I in three-pointers per game and three-point percentage.
                Head coach Craig Smith is in his third season at South Dakota. The Coyotes finished 14-18 overall and 5-11 in league play last season.
 
The Series with South Dakota: Wednesday will be the 173rd meeting between North Dakota State and South Dakota dating back to 1922-23. The Bison hold a 94-78 lead in the series. NDSU is 8-2 against the Coyotes as Division I opponents following a split last year with each team winning at home.
 
Last Time vs. South Dakota: The Bison lost 72-58 to South Dakota inside the DakotaDome on Feb. 11 last season after scoring just six points in the game's first 10 minutes. South Dakota never trailed in the contest, as Tyler Flack led the Coyotes with 18 points and 10 rebounds. NDSU shot 39 percent for the game, and junior guard Carlin Dupree led the Bison with 14 points.
 
Eighty-Plus: The Bison have scored 80-plus points in three straight conference games for the first time in five years (Dec. 28, 2011 through Jan. 5, 2012).
 
Showcasing Depth: Six different Bison have scored at least 18 points in a game this season: Paul Miller, Dexter Werner, A.J. Jacobson, Khy Kabellis, Carlin Dupree and Deng Geu.
 
Tale of Two Halves: The Bison have flipped the switch at halftime this season, posting a significant shooting advantage in the second half of games. NDSU is shooting 44 percent in the first half and 49 percent in the second half this season. Bison opponents are shooting 43 percent in the first half and 38 percent in the second half.

The Closer: Dexter Werner has made 37-of-50 shots after halftime this season for an impressive 74 percent.
 
Paul's Production: Junior guard Paul Miller is averaging 20 points and seven rebounds over the last five games. He was named The Summit League's Player of the Week on Jan. 3 following two wins over South Dakota State and Omaha.
 
Streak Snappers: The Bison snapped South Dakota State's 34-game home win streak on Dec. 28 with an 80-69 comeback victory in Brookings. SDSU's run was the 2nd-longest active streak in the nation -- and it started following an NDSU win in Frost Arena on Jan. 25, 2014.
 
Take Care: NDSU committed an average of 13.5 turnovers per game during the non-conference portion of the schedule. Through three Summit League games, the Bison are averaging only 9.7 turnovers per game.
 
Second Half Burst: NDSU has topped 50 points in the second half in each of the last three games. In conference play, the Bison are averaging 54 points in the second half.

Rebound Machine: Dexter Werner has double-digit boards in six of the last eight contests. Over those eight games, Werner is averaging 14.3 points and 10.5 rebounds per game and shooting 68 percent.
 
Scoring Defense: The Bison lead The Summit League in scoring defense, allowing 67.3 points per game through 16 games, which is four points fewer than the next best team.
 
Never Give Up: Three times this season, and twice in the past month, the Bison have trailed by double digits before coming back to win. NDSU pulled the same feat six times last year.
