FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State University women's basketball team held its first practice of the 2017-18 season Sunday, Oct. 1, at the Nodak Insurance Basketball Performance Center inside the Sanford Health Athletic Complex.
"I was very impressed with the pace at which we played today. It is clear our sophomore class has put in their work in the off season," North Dakota State fourth season head coach Maren Walseth said. "Their improvements were very noticeable today! Seeing our height go up against our practice players was another bright spot of day one."
North Dakota State returns four starters from last season's team in senior Taylor Thunstedt, and sophomores Sarah Jacobson, Rylee Nudell and Tyrah Spencer.
Thunstedt led the Bison in scoring with 14.5 points per game and made a single-season record 92 three-pointers last season. Entering her senior season, Thunstedt is the NDSU career record-holder with 229 three-pointers made and ranks second in career three-point field-goal percentage at .387.
An All-Summit League Newcomer Team selection in 2016-17, Jacobson averaged 9.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and a team-best 3.5 assists per game. Her 3.5 assists ranked fourth in The Summit League.
Nudell averaged 5.1 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, while Spencer averaged 3.5 points and 2.3 boards per game.
The Bison also return junior Kennedy Childers (6.4 points and 1.9 rebounds per game), and sophomores Anna Goodhope (4.4 points and 1.4 rebounds per game), Reilly Jacobson (6.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game) and Autumn Ogden (2.0 points and 1.9 rebounds per game.
NDSU welcomes five newcomers to the team for 2017-18 in junior Marina Fernandez (Barcelona, Spain/Casper College (Wyo.)), and freshmen Emily Dietz (West Fargo, N.D./Shanley HS), Michelle Gaislerova (Trutnov, Czech Republic/Lincoln Christian HS (Neb.)), Macey Kvilvang (Cando, N.D./North Star HS) and Danneka Voegeli (Winona, Minn./Winona HS).
North Dakota State is scheduled to tip-off the 2017-18 season with an exhibition game against Minnesota-Morris at home in the Scheels Center at the Sanford Health Athletic Complex Nov. 2 before hosting Mayville State for the regular season opener Nov. 10.
