Bison Open Summit League Play with 2-0 Shutout Win Over South Dakota

FARGO, N.D. – Sophomore goalkeeper Monica Polgar earned her third consecutive shutout, and junior Malley O'Brien netted her second goal of the season as the North Dakota State University women's soccer team opened Summit League action with a 2-0 win over the University of South Dakota Coyotes Thursday, Sept. 28, under the lights at Dacotah Field.  

Polgar made a match-high seven saves in 90 minutes between the posts to secure her third clean sheet of the season and improve to 3-3-0 overall in goal.

The Bison (3-8-0 overall, 1-0-0 Summit) jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage after O'Brien netted a goal five minutes into the contest. Danielle Algera fed the ball to O'Brien, who slotted her shot past Coyote goalkeeper Coral Suarez into the back of the net. It was Algera's second assist of 2017.

NDSU built its lead to 2-0 after a South Dakota (2-9-0 overall, 0-1-0 Summit) own goal in the 28th-minute. Junior Roxy Roemer curled a corner kick in front of the goal, and USD deflected the ball into its own net.

For the match, South Dakota outshot North Dakota State, 18-12, including an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. Both teams tallied four corner kicks and nine fouls.

Kellee Willer compiled seven shots and a pair of shots on goal to pace the Yotes offensively, while Suarez (2-6-0) made three saves in net but suffered the loss after surrendering the game-winning goal.

North Dakota State is scheduled to continue Summit League play Sunday, Oct. 1, at league preseason favorite Denver. First kick is slated for noon MT at DU Soccer Stadium.
