NDSU Volleyball Announces Pair of Additions

FARGO, N.D.—North Dakota State University head volleyball coach Jennifer Lopez announced Wednesday, Nov. 14, the addition of 6-foot-1 outside hitter Syra Tanchin (St. Michael, Minn. / St. Michael-Albertville H.S.) and 5-10 setter Kelley Johnson (Eagan, Minn. / Eagan H.S.), who will be joining the volleyball program in the fall of 2019.

HIGH SCHOOL: Became the first player in St. Michael-Albertville history to reach 1,000 kills in a career … Led the Knights coached by Paige Nells to a 22-6 record as a senior, 24-4 as a junior … Hit .317 with 224 digs, 34 assists and … Had one match with 27 kills … Three-time all-conference and academic all-conference … Played club volleyball for Minnesota Select … Named to JVA Watch List … AAU Academic All-American.
PERSONAL: Daughter of Ron and Tina Tanchin … Has one brother, Ron … Mother played basketball for McMaster College … Plans to major in biology.

HIGH SCHOOL: Led Eagan High School coached by Kathy Gillen to a pair of runner-up finishes at the Minnesota state volleyball tournament over the past two seasons … The Wildcats had a 25-3 record in 2018 … Had 42 service aces, 320 digs and 870 assists over the past two seasons … Played alongside current NDSU outside hitter Ally Murphy … Member of National Honor Society, High Schoolers Against Cancer, and Students Against Destructive Decisions … Active with church youth group … Played for Northern Lights coached by Eric Poppelman … Three-time AAU Academic All-American.
PERSONAL: Daughter of Bruce and Maureen Johnson … Has one brother, Ryan, and one sister, Nicole … Brother, Ryan, played basketball at the University of St. Thomas, and sister, Nicole, played volleyball for the University of Illinois at Chicago … Plans to major in biochemistry.
No. 6-seed North Dakota State (8-19) is scheduled to play Omaha (17-14) in a Summit League tournament quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Central Time Friday, Nov. 16, in Denver. The NDSU-Omaha winner plays South Dakota (19-9) in the semifinals 7 p.m. CT Saturday, Nov. 17.
