Badgers Use Late Run to Down Bison Women's Basketball

MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin Badgers went on an 8-2 run in the final 4:59 of the game Saturday afternoon at the Kohl Center, as the Badgers beat the NDSU women's basketball team 64-53.

Most of the first half was back-and-forth between the two teams. After an early Badger layup, the Bison went on a 7-2 run over a 2:52 span. Emily Dietz gave NDSU a 7-4 lead with 5:46 left in the quarter on a layup. Marina Fernandez stole a pass late in the quarter and hit a layup as the buzzer sounded to tie the game at 15-15 after the opening frame.

Danneka Voegeli hit a layup with 7:17 left in the first half to give the Bison a 23-19 lead. It would be the last field goal of the half for the Bison, as the Badgers answered with a 15-0 run. Tyrah Spencer hit a pair of free throws with :27 left for the first points since the Voegeli layup. Kelly Karlis hit a jumper with :03 left in the half to give Wisconsin a 34-23 lead at the break.

Karlis hit a 3-pointer with 6:07 left in the third period, giving the Badgers their largest lead of the game at 42-27. The Bison answered in a big way, as Rylee Nudell hit a 3-pointer to start a 13-1 run in 3:19. A long ball by Spencer with 2:27 left in the quarter closed the run, as the lead was cut to 43-40. Alex Luehring hit a 3-pointer with :37 left in the frame to give the Badgers a 50-46 lead into the fourth quarter.

Wisconsin scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to push the lead to 10 with 6:44 to play. A 3-pointer by Michelle Gaislerova and a layup by Dietz trimmed the lead to 56-51 with 5:29 left. Wisconsin went on an 8-2 run after the layup to finish the game and the 64-53 victory.

Gaislerova led the Bison with 18 points, while Nudell and Fernandez each added nine, a career-high for Fernandez. Imani Lewis had a game-high 19 points for the Badgers. Gaislerova had a career-high four assists, while Spencer had three. Fernandez led the Bison with six rebounds, while Voegeli added five boards. Fernandez tied a career-high with two steals.

NDSU was 20-of-50 (40%) from the field and 9-of-24 (37.5%) from 3-point range. The Badgers were 24-of-60 (40%) from the floor and 3-of-12 from downtown. The Bison were perfect in all four trips to the free throw line, while Wisconsin was 13-of-17 (76.5%). Wisconsin had an advantage in all the specialty stats, including points off turnovers (19-7), points in the paint (36-16), second chance points (12-4), fast break points (10-2) and bench points (18-4).

The Bison return to action on Friday, Nov. 23, as they face Pacific in the first game of the Turkey Tip-Off in Stockton, Calif. The game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Central Time.
