Western Illinois Snaps Streak with 3-1 Win Over North Dakota State

FARGO, N.D. – Mackenzie Steckler and Shiah Sanders each had 12 kills and combined for nine blocks as Western Illinois defeated North Dakota State 3-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19) in a Summit League match played Friday, Nov. 2, before 1,019 spectators in the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse. The Leathernecks snapped a 24-match losing streak with the win.
NDSU (7-17, 5-8 SL) is scheduled to host Purdue Fort Wayne (14-12, 5-7 SL) on Senior Day at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4. The volleyball program will recognize lone senior McKenzie Burke.
Western Illinois (2-24, 1-12 SL) outscored the Bison 6-1 down the stretch to take set one, while NDSU broke free in a back-and-forth second set to hold off the Leathernecks. WIU led by six several times in the third, but North Dakota State could only cut the deficit to one, the last time at 18-17.
The Leathernecks outhit NDSU .193 to .144 overall including .379 in the third set. Emma Norris and Mariah Mitchell both added eight kills, while Jaime Johnson and Cassie Hunt combined for 44 assists.
The Bison stayed close behind the seventh 'double-double' from Alexis Bachmeier, who had 12 kills and 14 digs. Bachmeier also contributed a career-high seven blocks. Emily Halverson finished with 10 kills and six blocks. NDSU held a 12-11 edge in team blocks.
