Shoultz Ties Steal Record as NDSU Beats Columbia 7-1 at UCR Classic

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Katie Shoultz went 4-for-5 and tied a school record with 5 stolen bases as the Bison defeated Columbia 7-1 in the UCR Classic played Sunday, March 11, at Amy S. Harrison Softball Field.

NDSU (11-7) is scheduled to play at Cal State Northridge (10-14) at 4:30 p.m. CT Wednesday, March 14. The Matadors play Seattle and Texas Tech today.

Shoultz, a junior from Muscatine, Iowa (Muscatine H.S.), sparked an offense that produced a season-high 16 hits. She tied the NDSU single-game record set twice previously by Bison Athletic Hall of Fame shortstop Nikki Flynn Gregg vs. North Dakota (4-22-00) and Edinboro, Pa. (3-8-99).

Shoultz singled up the middle with one out and scored on Vanessa Anderson's two-out RBI base hit to put North Dakota State up 1-0 in the first inning.

The Bison made it 2-0 in the third. Shoultz led off with a single, moved to second on a ground out, stole third and scored on Zoe Stavrou's two-out single to left.

North Dakota State extended the lead to 5-0 with three runs in the top of the fifth. Maddie Hansen connected for a RBI double to right center, Stephanie Soriano pushed across the second run with a ground and Madyson Camacho singled home the third.

Three straight doubles from Bre Beatty, Anderson and Hansen produced two runs in the sixth inning to put the Bison ahead 7-0. Hansen's two-base hit produced two runs and she finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI. Anderson and Stavrou each matched career bests with three hits.

KK Leddy (3-2) benefitted from the offense and did her part, allowing only three hits in the complete game win. Leddy struck out eight and walked two.

Columbia (3-8) broke up the shutout bid in the bottom of the sixth on Sommer Grzybek's RBI single.
