NDSU Opens Duke Inaugural Tournament with 10-4 Win over Host Blue Devils

DURHAM, N.C. – Bre Beatty and Vanessa Anderson both went 3-for-5 with a double and RBI as North Dakota State defeated the host Blue Devils 10-4 at the Duke University Inaugural Tournament played Friday, March 2, before 375 spectators at Duke Softball Stadium.
 
NDSU (6-5) is scheduled to play Yale (0-6) at noon CT and Kent State (9-4) at 5 p.m. CT on Saturday, March 3. Yale lost 4-3 to Duke in extra innings in Friday's final game.
 
North Dakota State pounded out a season-high 14 hits and took advantage of five errors by Duke to overturn an early 1-0 deficit. The Bison tied the game at 1-1 in the second on Maddie Hansen's RBI double.
 
NDSU took a 6-1 lead with four runs in the top of the fourth inning taking advantage of bases-loaded walk to Tabby Heinz, a pair of Blue Devils' miscues and Anderson run-scoring single.
 
Duke cut the deficit to 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles from Reilly Metzger and Rachel Abboud, along with a Jameson Kavel sacrifice fly. Abboud led the Blue Devils with three hits including a double.
 
The Bison responded with three runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 9-4. Katie Shoultz provided a run-scoring bunt single to push across one run, an error chased home another and Beatty doubled home the third. Shoultz had two hits and scored twice.
 
Jacquelyn Sertic (5-3) went the distance to earn the win for NDSU. Sertic scattered six hits, walked five and struck out four.
 
Katherine Huey (5-3), Amelia Wiercioch and Peyton St. George pitched for Duke with Huey taking the loss. The trio combined to walk three and strike out one.
