VERMILLION, S.D. –
Jacquelyn Sertic and
KK Leddy each threw complete game three-hit shutouts and
Zoe Stavrou collected five RBI as North Dakota State defeated South Dakota by the scores of 1-0 and 5-0 in a Summit League softball doubleheader Saturday, April 21, at Nygaard Field.
Â
NDSU (24-14, 4-2 SL) and South Dakota (15-31, 5-8 SL) are scheduled to close out the three-game series at 11 a.m. Sunday, April 22.
Â
North Dakota State scored game one's only run in the top of the eighth.
Madyson Camacho and
Katie Shoultz led off with walks. Camacho and Shoultz then pulled off the double steal. Stavrou produced a sacrifice fly to left to score Camacho.
Â
South Dakota didn't go quietly in the bottom of the eighth. The Coyotes started the frame with a Lauren Wobken walk and Christy Warnock was hit by pitch. The runners moved to second and third on a ground out. An intentional walk to Jessica Rogers loaded the bases, but a pop out to first ended the game.
Â
Sertic (18-7) allowed only three hits and walked three to record her sixth shutout of the season. Sertic struck out 12 to reach double-figures for the 12th time this season and 30th in her career.
Â
Alexis Devers (0-8) limited NDSU to only three hits, walked six and struck out six in taking the loss.
Â
Stavrou went 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles and four RBI as North Dakota State scored five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to break the second game open.
Â
Shoultz and Camacho both singled to start the fifth inning. Stavrou belted a double down the left field line to put NDSU ahead 2-0.
Â
In the sixth,
Jaime Barta led off with an infield single, moved to second on a
Julia Luciano sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on another Shoultz single. Barta scored on a Camacho base hit, while Stavrou laced a double to right center to extend the lead to 5-0.
Â
Leddy (5-6) struck out four scattered three hits and walked one to complete her second shutout of the season.
Â
Dustie Durham and Gill Woodward pitched for South Dakota with Durham picking up the loss. Fernandez had two hits for the Coyotes.
