NDSU Baseball Earns 8-5 Win Over Mayville State Tuesday

FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State University baseball team posted an 8-5 victory over the Mayville State University Comets Tuesday, May 1, at Newman Outdoor Field.

North Dakota State (18-19) is scheduled to face Oral Roberts in the game one of a three-game Summit League series Friday, May 4, at 6:30 p.m.

Senior Mason Pierzchalski went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, and Matt Elsenpeter added a 2-for-3 performance with two runs scored and a RBI to lead the Bison at the plate.

Redshirt sophomore Mitch O'Connor (1-3) earned the win on the mound after allowing no hits with six strikeouts and no walks in five innings. Freshman Jake Drew secured his first collegiate save after throwing a scoreless ninth inning.

NDSU jumped out to an 8-0 lead over Mayville State (29-10) after scoring seven runs in the second inning. Nick Emanuel and Logan Busch crossed home plate on an error for the opening two runs of the inning before Elsenpeter hit a RBI single to left field and Pierzchalski hit a towering two-run double to right center. Carter Thompson brought home the final run of the inning on a single through the left side.

The Comets rallied with five runs in the top of the sixth, but could get no closer the remainder of the game.

Spencer Merle went 1-for-3 with a triple, run scored and RBI, pacing Mayville State in the batter's box.

MSU starter Austin Herrington took the loss after giving up five runs, two earned, on four hits with two walks and no strikeouts in one inning.

The game was an exhibition contest for Mayville State.
