MACOMB, Ill. – Two of the most experienced veterans on the North Dakota State women's soccer team were not going to start Summit League play with anything less than a victory.
Â
In the 104th minute of a scoreless tie vs. Western Illinois – nearly four minutes into the second overtime period – Bison senior midfielder
Roxy Roemer sent a high-arching corner kick across the field and into the box. NDSU senior defender
Hanna Norman was on the other end, heading the ball into the goal for the game-winner.
Â
The 1-0 victory improved the Bison women to 4-4-0 on the season and gave them a 1-0 start to Summit League play.
Â
"After a long trip to Hawaii, coming here and getting a result is a huge positive," said NDSU head coach
Mike Regan. "Western Illinois is a much-improved team who will likely take points off other Summit League teams over the course of the campaign."
Â
"We were pleased to get the goal off a set piece," said Regan. "We created a lot of chances throughout the match, but at some point those chances have to be in the back of the net."
Â
NDSU has now won four straight meetings with Western Illinois by a combined score of 7-0.
Â
The Bison started fast and had several scoring opportunities go unfulfilled. Junior
Mariah Haberle hit the crossbar in the opening minute of the match and also put a shot off the right post in the 24th minute.
Â
NDSU threatened even more in the second half, but was unable to light the scoreboard. Senior
Holly Enderle sent a shot off the crossbar in the 73rd minute.
Mallory Fenske put a free kick on goal from 30 yards out in the 80th minute, only to see it saved.

Â
The Bison finished with a 17-14 advantage in shots, with Haberle firing nine of those shots. Junior goalkeeper
Monica Polgar registered five saves in her 104-minute shutout.
