FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The North Dakota State women's soccer team scored early and often Sunday, running away with a 5-1 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne.
Â
The Bison improved to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in Summit League play.
Â
NDSU strung together a barrage of offensive attacks early in the match, taking the lead in just the 9th minute when senior
Hanna Norman headed in a free kick from senior
Mallory Fenske. The Bison went up 2-0 in the 20th minute when junior
Mariah Haberle buried a shot in the back of the net, with an assist to
Sydney Johnson.
Â
Purdue Fort Wayne got one back in the 32nd minute, but the Bison responded with another goal in the 39th minute when
Daniella Jasper slipped a pass to
Holly Enderle, who beat the Mastodon keeper 1-on-1.
Â
NDSU added a pair of goals in the second half. Haberle notched her second of the game with a header on a Fenske free kick, and sophomore
Ellen Schneider scored her first collegiate goal in the 75th minute to set the final margin at 5-1.
Â
"To get six points in the opening weekend is extremely positive," said NDSU head coach
Mike Regan. "For a few games now, we've been creating a lot of opportunities without capitalizing, but I was very pleased with our finishing today. We scored goals from different places with a variety of players, which is promising."
Â
Regan also highlighted the effort of redshirt freshman
Ellen Schneider in scoring her first collegiate goal.
Â
"Ellie Schneider came on for us late after being out the better part of two years with ACL injuries," Regan said. "She is so mentally tough – a great lead-by-example player for us. For her to come on and score a fantastic goal with a great finish, we're very pleased for her."
Â
This was NDSU's sixth straight win over the Mastodons, improving to a 17-1 aggregate in the last five years of the series.
Â
NDSU returns home to host Summit League preseason favorite Denver on Thursday night.
