Bison Drop Tight Game in Texas Opener

EDINBURG, Texas - All the runs were scored in the first three innings Friday afternoon, as Portland (3-1) defeated the North Dakota State (1-3) baseball team 2-1 in the opening game of the Al Ogletree Classic at UT Rio Grande Valley.

The Bison scored their lone run in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Carter Thompson singled up the middle to drive in Peter Brookshaw, giving the Bison an early 1-0 lead. 

NDSU held the lead until the top of the third inning, when Portland scored both its runs. With one out, Chad Stevens hit a sacrifice fly that drove in Gabe Skoro. The final run came as Blake Porter scored on a wild pitch. NDSU moved the tying run to second in the bottom of the ninth inning, but couldn't bring in the runner.

Brookshaw, Jack Simonsen, Tucker Rohde, Thompson and Brock Anderson each had a hit for the Bison. Brookshaw scored a run, while Thompson drove one in. Zach Smith suffered his first loss of the season on the mound, giving up two earned runs on six hits in seven innings of work. He struck out three and walked one. Hunter Koep struck out one in two innings out of the bullpen. 

The Bison return to action on Saturday, Feb. 23, as they face host UT Rio Grande Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
