EDINBURG, Texas - Two big innings by Portland (6-2) and UT Rio Grande Valley (5-3) in each game on Sunday were enough to down the North Dakota State (1-6) baseball team on the final day of the Al Ogletree Classic.
In the opener with Portland, the Pilots scored five runs in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead. The Bison slowly chipped away at the lead, starting with a pair of runs in the fifth inning.
Jayse McLean tripled to left center, driving in
Carter Thompson for the first run. McLean then scored as
Jake Malec reached on an error. In the sixth inning, the Bison tied the game with three runs.
Tucker Rohde singled to right field, as
Brock Anderson scored. Thompson then singled to right, driving in Rohde and
Sean Noel. The Pilots scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning for the 8-3 win.
Anderson and Noel led the Bison with a pair of hits each.
Ben Smith had a no-decision on the mound in three innings of work, giving up five runs (one earned) on five hits. Smith walked one and struck out three.
Jordan Harms allowed two hits, while striking out two and walking one in two innings of work.
Gabe Pilla dropped to 0-1 on the year, giving up three unearned runs on three hits in two innings. Pilla also struck out three and walked one.
NDSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the nightcap, but it was a late four-run inning that doomed the Bison. In the second inning, McLean singled to left field to drive in Anderson. In the third inning,
Jack Simonsen brought in
Bennett Hostetler for a 2-0 lead. UT Texas Rio Grande Valley scored a run in the third, but NDSU added single runs in the sixth and seventh to take a 4-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, Noel doubled to right field to bring in Simonsen. The run in the seventh came as Malec singled up the middle to plate
Ben Tallman. UT Rio Grande Valley scored four runs in the seventh and added an insurance run in the eighth for the 6-4 victory.
Noel led the Bison with three hits, while Malec added a pair.
Blake Tritch had a no-decision in the start on the mound, giving up a run on three hits and five walks, while striking out a pair.
Alec Holcomb dropped to 0-1 on the year, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks, while striking out two.
Kyle Ferderer tossed the final inning, giving up a run on three hits and a walk, while striking two out.
The Bison are scheduled to play a four-game series at Northern Colorado next week, starting with a game on Friday, March 1.
