GREELEY, Colo. - Northern Colorado (1-6) used a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the North Dakota State (1-7) baseball team 7-6 Thursday afternoon at Jackson Stadium.
A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning gave the Bears an early 1-0 lead. NDSU answered back with a pair of runs in the second inning to take the lead.
Jayse McLean started the inning with his first home run of the season to tie the game. With two outs,
Bennett Hostetler reached on an error that allowed
Carter Thompson to score from third after his one out triple.
The Bison had a big fourth inning, scoring three runs on two hits. With the bases loaded, Hostetler singled to right to drive in
Tucker Rohde.
Peter Brookshaw singled to plate Thompson before
Sean Noel reached on an error that allowed Hostetler to score the final run of the inning.
With one out in the fifth inning, the Bison extended the lead to 6-1 on Thompson's first home run of the season. The Bears started to chip away at the Bison lead, scoring a run in the fifth and two runs each in the sixth and seventh to tie the game before the walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth.Â
Hostetler and Thompson led the Bison with a pair of hits apiece. Thompson scored three runs as well.
Zach Smith had a no-decision in the start, as he went 5.2 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out six.
Hunter Koep gave up a pair of runs on three walks in two-thirds of an inning.
Jake Drew dropped to 0-1 on the mound, giving up a run on three hits in 2.1 innings of work. He walked one and struck out three.
The Bison return to action on Friday when they face Northern Colorado in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. (Central) in Greeley, Colo.
