OMAHA, Neb. - Omaha used a pair of two-out walks in the bottom of the 13th inning Saturday night to beat the North Dakota State baseball team 7-6 in the Summit League opener for both teams.
Keil Krumwiede walked on a full count with two outs in the bottom of the 13th to load the bases for the Mavericks (9-5-1, 1-0 Summit). Braden Rogers then did the same thing, as Matt Bondarchuk scored the winning run. The run was the first in extra innings for either team after the Bison (2-9, 0-1 Summit) scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to force extra innings.Â
Trailing by a pair of runs in the top of the ninth,
Jake Malec hit a single to left field that drove in
Zach Solano and
Jayse McLean to tie the game. NDSU needed a late rally after the Mavericks scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead. The Bison had taken the lead in the top of the seventh inning on a double to center field by
Carter Thompson that scored
Tucker Rohde and
Jack Simonsen.
Peter Brookshaw and
Bennett Hostetler had RBI singles in the sixth inning that gave NDSU its first lead of the game at 2-1.
Brookshaw and Malec led the Bison with two hits apiece, while Thompson and Malec each drove in a pair of runs.
Zach Smith had a no-decision on the mound, striking out seven and walking one in 6.1 innings on the bump. Smith allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits.
Parker Harm struck out seven in four innings out of the bullpen.
Gabe Pilla dropped to 0-2, as he gave up a run on a hit and three walks, while striking out one in two-thirds innings of work.
The Bison return to action on Sunday, as they face Omaha in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for Noon at Millard North High School in Omaha.Â
